How To Open a Cash Register Without the Key or When Power is Down

If you're operating a retail store, restaurant or bar or just about any other type of small business that takes payments you're most likely using a POS system for transactions , in order to make it easier on yourself and your employees as well as your customers. In spite of your efforts to make everything easier, disasters happen and on such retail systems one of the biggest disasters is power outage without a backup of power and a situation in which you're left without keys to the cash drawer. This scenario will have you in a situation where you're locked out of your own cash register , without access to it whatsoever .  In this article we will examine all of the common suggestions for this scenario, break down the myths from the good practical advice and see what works and what doesn't work to potentially open a cash register without the key. Method 1: Applying Battery Voltage to Pins of Cash Drawer If you have done any research, you might have run into this advice, which is to apply a small battery voltage source to certain pins of the cable of the electronic cash drawer in order to energize the solenoid that controls the lever which unlocks the cash drawer. This sounds plausible and in fact it may work on some extremely old models, however most most of the up-to-date models from serious manufacturers will not allow this intrusion, if you think about it it shouldn't be that easy to open up a cash drawer just by caring a 9-volt battery and a couple of wires in your pocket. You also have to consider the possibility of applying the voltage to the wrong pins or [...]

Common issues with a POS Pole Display and how to resolve them

Being in the business of free POS, in particular PC POS software, we have seen our fair share of issues with Pole Display devices, also known as customer-facing displays. Some of the most common problems with these devices are also ones that you can fairly easy resolve yourself. Let's take a look at a few of those issues. The POS pole display won't turn on. Make sure that the power adapter and it's cable is plugged-in from the wall to the display and is adequately providing power to the device. Believe it or not way back when, we had an issue with a customer using our tanning salon software, who was convinced that something was wrong with their pole  display, and later found out that their pole display power adapter was still left buried in the shipping box and never even taken out of the box. Also check that your power outlet is working properly and that it's providing power. And if you find out that the power adapter is not providing power, with a voltmeter or some other method of testing, consider replacing your power adapter, which will be less costly then replacing the entire display. The pole display is not showing any text. You have to make sure that the pole display is connected to the POS system and that the cable is not damaged and it's compatible with the POS software. Also make sure that you have all the correct manufacturer drivers or software installed for the proper functioning of the pole display. Ensure that the display is configured with the correct settings like baud rate, data bits, etc. Also if too many settings have been tampered with and you are unsure [...]
